Integrating Work-Life Balance to Support Talent Retention

A health work-life balance is important for the well-being and job satisfaction of employees. Thus, it is essential for employers to acknowledge and provide importance of work-life balance which is not only improves the overall satisfaction and efficiency of the workforce but also plays a vibrant role in retaining top-notch talent. The work-life balance of an employee will have an impact on employee retention that encourages business owners to recognises effective strategies that can contributes to supportive environment that keeps their best employees engaged and motivated. Forbes has revealed that millennial and Gen Z is giving their best importance to career path that aligns with their expected lifestyle outside of work. This perception has brought these generations to actively search out companies and job opportunities that can support their preferred way of life. This represents a shift from the traditional approach of developing a life around a job.

This desire to achieve better work-life balance applies to all types of employees, including after COVID-19. Besides pay rises, people wanted more flexible working hours, which made remote work important. This is highlighted by the “Great Resignation” feature – whereby it was found that 4.53 million Americans resigned among voluntarily quitting their jobs in March 2022. The BLS data reported 4.51 million resignations in November 2021 which is lower compared to this number. This figure was slashed down to 4.3 million in July 2022; nevertheless, employers started considering such factors to attract and retain talent.

What is Work-Life Balance?

Work-life balance does not only mean allocating some time to your friends, hobbies, and rest but the process is also about getting an effective satisfied-productive work team that creates contented employees in organization. For instance, The American Psychological Association states that employees who are happy at workplace are 31% more productive and selling is 37% percent higher than others. However, lack of work-life balance leads to higher worker attrition and lower employees’ commitment. Often, the employee’s balance that they desire turns out to be the decisive factor on whether or not they will continue with the company. Employee turnover issues can be reduced and become effective workforce if the organizations start to value and practice proper work-life balance

Why is Work-Life Balance Essential to Employee Retention?

Half of the workforce considers work-life balance as among top priorities, which boosts retention probability. In fact, according to kronos’ employee engagement series, more than 95% of HR leaders say yes that burnout among employees is one of the biggest factors for high employee turnover.

However, lack of work-life balance can contribute dissatisfaction among  employees when they feel overworked and burned out, which can ultimately make it harder for them to meet their objectives. It is applicable even to distant employees too, because about 50 percent of them acknowledge that the burnout has become noticeable at times when they work at home.

Organizations, for instance, have the capacity to provide work-life balance by introducing flexibility in the schedule of work hours, remote working, or telecommuting. As a result of that, productivity levels will increase and costs will be reduced. Furthermore, maintaining a healthy work-life balance can have numerous positive outcomes as below:

Burnout Prevention - Companies discourage high levels of work stress by promoting a healthy balance between one’s work and life. This also contribute to increased productivity by preventing subsequent health problems and frequent absenteeism associated with burnout and enhancing employee retention.

Promoting the Well-being of the Mind – Performing at their best requires content and healthy employees, making work-life balance essential in retaining workers. The ability to de-stress and rejuvenate through this balance allows for a fresh perspective, leading to improved mental health that benefits the workplace. It is crucial to maintain balance, as overworking employees can lead to unhappiness and potentially decrease retention rates.

Establishing Trust and Fostering Loyalty - Higher retention rates can be achieved by building a strong relationship between employees and their organizations, which begins with the establishment of trust. Trust can be earned by acknowledging and appreciating the personal lives of employees, and it results in loyalty to the organization. Therefore, it is crucial for companies to prioritize earning the trust of their employees.

Drawing in Exceptional Candidates - An excellent balance between work and life attracts potential employees. When a business is known for good work-life balance, it draws the best people. This raises the quality of work and keeps employees. More hiring shows how important work-life balance is in keeping employees.

Strategies to Enhance Work-Life Balance Effectively

Once organizations recognize the crucial impact of work-life balance on employee retention and engagement, it is important for the organizations to look for the ways to become highly desirable companies with proper work-life balance. Consider these tactics to achieve that goal:

Work arrangements that offer flexibility – Companies have the power to increase their employee satisfaction and overall inclusion by implementing flexible workflows. These can range from remote work options to compressed work weeks or flexible hours. By providing these options, employees are better able to strike a balance between personal and professional responsibilities, thus demonstrating the company’s true commitment to their well-being

 Offer childcare services - Having childcare available on site can be very useful for working parents situations where parents find themselves in a situation where young children need to be looked after for example when their regular nanny is unable to work due to illness and should if they take leisure time in these cases Local preschool children A sheltered and stable environment Providing valuable resources can be a place where children can stay while their parents fulfill their job responsibilities.

Encourage participation in communal events for families - Scheduling regular bonding activities for your employees and their loved ones can create a strong bond between them. Consider hosting an after-work happy hour or family picnic on a Friday evening or Saturday. This strategy gives the employees the opportunity to socialize and build relationship outside of work, as well as spend quality time with their families.

Wellness Programs- Wellness programs that support employee well-being through exercise classes, stress management workshops and mental health resources leads to a healthy work-life balance. These strategies demonstrate the company’s commitment to employee well-being and can brings to greater job satisfaction, reduced stress, and increased psychological well-being. Employers who prioritizing employee well-being will help organizations to achieve productivity and encourages employee retention.

Respecting time off is imperative - To ensure your employees’ time is respected, avoid contacting them via email or phone during vacation or off-hours. It is important for companies to practice expectation that work matters should not be discussed when an employee is absent due to illness. If necessary, the employer can request from employees to share their calendars with their respective supervisor to avoid distractions during their non-working hours, but this should not be set as compulsory and by doing so the employer can ensure that they are not troubling their employees when they are not working.

The importance of work-life balance in terms of employee retention and employee engagement cannot be overstated.
